Ankylosing spondylitis is a form of arthritis that impacts the spinal column, leading to inflammation in both the spine and major joints.
Causes & Treatment of Ankylosing Spondylitis
This inflammation causes stiffness and discomfort. Ankylosing spondylitis lacks a known precise cause, although genetic factors appear to play a role. Specifically, individuals carrying the HLA-B27 gene face a significantly higher likelihood of developing ankylosing spondylitis. However, it is important to note that not all individuals with this gene will develop the condition.
People with AS are able to remain fully independent or minimally disabled in the long term. However, some people eventually become severely disabled as a result of the bones in their spine fusing in a fixed position and damage to other joints, such as the hips or knees.
